Just a reminder that it is Education Outside the Classroom week next week. We are really excited and it will be a very busy week in the Kiwi Team. Please make sure you have lots of rest ready for our action packed days! If you haven't paid the $35, just a reminder that this needs to be paid this week otherwise your child won't be able to join us!
Thank you for all the parent helpers.. We might just have enough now, however, if you are still available to supervise children next week please let me know.

School production

What an awesome night it was, the children were so excited about being on stage and sharing their song and dance. We had been practising for weeks and the children had been working so well to learning some tricky German words! Didn't they do well? Here are some pictures Room 9 on the stage...

Peer Recognition Certificate

Every Friday Room 9 children nominate and then vote for a person in the class who they believe have been doing one of the ABC's a lot over the week. This is a great way for the class to really think about their own choices at school and realise that doing our ABC's benefit everyone around them.
The children really take ownership of this certificate, they decide who will get it and they all sign the certificate before it is rewarded to someone in our class. I have been really impressed with the thought process the children are using to decide who will get it and why. They realise that it is not about nominating their 'friends' but someone who has been doing good things. They are able to describe why the person should receive it too.

Diwali Celebration

Last week it was Diwali. To celebrate we read a big book about Diwali and learnt about the special food that is eaten during this time. We were lucky enough to sample some of the treats when Nandini and Hamish brought some in for us to try, they were very yummy!

Waldegger - German Dance

The time for the production is getting closer and closer. We have been working hard in Room 9 with our song and our dance. Tomorrow we have lovely Maree from Germany coming in to our class to have a look at how we are going and to help us with pronouncing the German words in our song.

Here is an example of what our traditional dance is going to look like, we have modified it a little bit, but this will give you an idea of what we will be doing.

Poetry Recital 2014 Finalists

Dear Families,

Thank you again for making the time to come to our Poetry Recital. The children were so excited to share their poems with you and didn’t they all do a fantastic job? I could see a lot of proud people/children yesterday.

The hardest part was having to only choose four children to go onto the Kiwi Team poetry finals. Mrs Van Zyl and I sat down after school and spent time really thinking about who met the criteria of the Kiwi Team oral language rubric.

In the end we decided that the following children would be going through:

Hamish Lad
Sneha Nandini

Brooke Johnstone

Blake Cooper

Congratulations again to everyone! You all did a fantastic job learning those poems in just a few weeks.

German song

For our Inquiry country study we have been exploring Germany. Part of the celebration of our learning will be going on the stage for the Reremoana School production and sharing something from our chosen country. We have been learning a song that we will sing on the stage. It is a popular children's song that they often learn in Kindergarten.
Keep practicing it at home ready for the production next term…

Our 'ABC' chart for behaviour

Reremoana School has been involved in the 'Positive behaviour for Learning' programme during 2014. Part of this involvement has been setting up a new set of positive behaviour guidelines. The PB4L team have introduced these new guidelines to all the classrooms in the school and they are called our 'ABC's'

Our school website has some more information about the PB4L programme, here is a snapshot of what the PB4L programme is about and the positive outcomes it has, not only on children's behaviour, but also their learning:

Letters and Sounds

We are now up to Phase 2 for the letters and sounds programme. In class we have been looking at blends, chunks and word endings. I have been super impressed with how quickly the children in Room 9 have picked up this new learning.

Maori Waiata

We have been learning to say some basic phases and sentences in Maori. We also have been learning different Maori Waiata (songs). Here are two of Room 9's Maori experts teaching the class the song 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes' in Maori!

The Living World

In Room 9 we have been busy with our science unit on 'The Living World'. We have studied some artists that make artwork using the world around us and also have been busy being gardeners, growing our own pea plants. They are getting so big now and soon we will be munching on yummy peas! Check us out as we planted our plants…

In Room 9 we have been learning our doubles for Maths. We are experts at doubles to 10, but now we are developing an understanding of doubles to 20. To help us learn these we have been singing a song about doubles. You can practice it at home too:

Mothers Day High Tea

We had our annual Mother's day high tea on Friday and what a lovely celebration of our mums. I saw very excited children all day as we prepared for our special day and lots of smiles as they spent special time with their mums and nanas as we munched on yummy treats. Thank you to all the mums (and nanas) who made the time to join us. It is these memories that the children remember for a very long time.

Maths - Tens frame learning

In Maths we have been using tens frames to help us with our maths learning. Miss J holds up a tens frame and asks how many dots you can see and how many more to make ten. It has to be done quickly without counting each dot! Practice this at home using this clip...

Wearable Arts Technology Show

After lots of hard work and practicing the Kiwi team had their fashion show on Friday to celebrate all the learning we have been doing this term. How fantastic were the children? I could see some very proud parents in the audience and I have to admit I was pretty proud myself. Remember it was their first time on the stage too! Enjoy some of the photos below, such excited smiles on faces too:
